STYLISTIC CODE AND PUBLIC SPACES: INTERVIEW WITH STUDIO CIANI DESIGN

Design research is one of the pillars of SITLOSOPHY®, every single model up to the complete collection is the result of the combination of experience, market knowledge and a profound mastery of the language of industrial design, a discipline that synthesises aesthetics and ergonomics. The designer is the true director of the communication of a product’s identity.

Among the designers who collaborated in the construction of the SITLOSOPHY® catalogue are Edi and Paolo Ciani who shaped the Metropolitan, Ikebana, Saudade and Enkei collections.

The Ciani Design studio was born from a family passion that Edi and Paolo cultivated with dedicated studies and took shape by collaborating with some important architectural firms. Since 1987 they have been creating and developing products for important companies in the fields of furniture, home, office, contract and outdoor furniture.

Their stylistic code is formal cleanliness and minimalism, characters that are also found in the collections designed for SITLOSOPHY®. Metropolitan has given the Ciani studio the opportunity to confront itself with a complete collection of office chairs. A range of products in different heights but guaranteeing the same level of comfort and elegance. Ikebana, on the other hand, was a challenge in developing an entire family of products using a single module: a game of modules that can be endlessly combined.

Edi and Paolo Ciani’s latest projects for SITLOSOPHY® are Enkei and Saudade. The first is a passe-partout product, capable of being used in contract and office environments as in the home. A chair with sinuous lines that embraces the user and plays on the emptiness of the base and the fullness of the seat. Saudade, on the other hand, brings the softness and breadth of home living sofas into spaces designed for the community. Edi and Paolo Ciani’s style is unmistakable: linearity and minimalism.

The materials the designers use are different and vary according to the project and the target environment. However, wood remains their material par excellence, a noble and precious material whose roots are deeply embedded in Friuli Venezia Giulia where the design studio is based.

In their dialogue with SITLOSOPHY® at the Salone del Mobile 2022, Edi and Paolo Ciani looked back on their professional career talking about industrial design, materials and the future of design.
